A Holter monitor is a 24- or 48-hour heart monitor. It records your heart's activity during your normal activities, day and night. You will be asked to keep a diary of your activities and any cardiac symptoms (such as chest pain, rapid or skipped beats or dizziness). At the end of the 24 or 48-hour period, the recording will be evaluated. Longer monitoring periods, utilizing event monitors, are sometimes needed. Event monitors allow you to activate the recorder when you experience symptoms.
