What To Expect

When preparing for a joint replacement, you may come to the Nebraska Joint Replacement Center up to one month before your surgery. At this time you go through the pre-operation process to make sure all necessary X-Rays, tests, etc. have been done to properly prepare you for your surgery. The pre-op process can be done as much as one month, but no less than one week before your joint replacement.

At the Nebraska Joint Replacement Center, a group approach is taken with these specific procedures. Your length of stay at the hospital is usually four to five days starting on Sunday. Sunday afternoon, you and a family member join eight or nine other joint replacement candidates for an informal lunch and education session. Here you have the chance to meet with an anesthesiologist, a physical therapist, the director of the Nebraska Joint Replacement Center and the director of nursing on three north -- the floor on which joint replacement patients stay. At this time, you will learn what to expect from a rehabilitation and nursing standpoint and are free to ask any questions of those present. In general, you are invited to this lunch to help alleviate anxieties and to put your mind at ease.

Surgeries at the Nebraska Joint Replacement Center take place on Mondays and Tuesdays. One day after your surgery, you are allowed to wear normal street clothes. Wellness is emphasized at the Nebraska Joint Replacement Center and you urged to be as comfortable as possible. Physical therapy starts after surgery. The mornings are reserved for individual therapy in the therapy department. In the afternoons you will join in group rehabilitation with other joint replacement patients on your home floor.

Depending on the day of your surgery and your condition, dismissal is toward the end of the week usually on Thursday or Friday.
