Good Samaritan Hospital Expansion Project Including the Ron and Carol Cope Heart Center

Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska is in the midst of an exciting construction project that will expand our regional referral facility by more than 120,000 square feet! Included in this addition are new surgical suites and surgical support departments, new endoscopy suites, a new atrium-style cafeteria and dining area, new gathering spaces for visitors, and the Ron and Carol Cope Heart Center. This heart center will bring the diverse cardiac services offered at Good Samaritan including outpatient testing, diagnostic and interventional catheterizations, open heart surgery and more into one geographical location within our facility.

It is with great pride that we bring this project to our community. It is Dedicated to You! and will open in summer 2012.

Construction Updates

Construction Update - October 7, 2011
GSH Expansion Project Including Ron and Carol Cope Heart Center

This week’s high winds kept roof work to a minimum, but progress continued in all other areas of the construction site. Here are some high points from the last few weeks and looking forward.

  • Work along 31st Street continued this week and will wrap up early next week. This work to run conduits and electrical service along 31st Street was originally scheduled for completion this week, but rain and adverse weather conditions over the last few weeks caused delays. The street and curb are being poured today and next week sidewalks and dirt work will be completed before the area is re-opened to traffic.
  • Phase II storm retention work continues on the north and south portions of the site. These storm retention areas will collect water from the future parking lots on both ends of the construction site. Some MOB parking lot handicapped spaces were taken out of service for this work, but concrete has now been replaced and the spaces will be open for use next week.
  • A complete system steam shut down is scheduled for Thursday, October 13. Starting at 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, steam will be shut down to the entire Good Samaritan Hospital until 8 a.m. on Friday, October 14. This complex project is required to replace a boiler and surge tank piping in the central utility plant. During this time there will be no hot water and sterilizers will also be out of service. Heat in our facility is powered by steam which will also be affected as part of this project. But during this time of year, electric reheat units and economizers will maintain a comfortable environment for those inside our buildings. More information and reminders about this specific project are planned for next week. Thank you for planning accordingly.
  • The first section of ground floor south of the West Tower connector gets concrete today. Next week, the concrete crew will move up to finish the roof deck which, in turn, will allow steel erecting to wrap up on the south side.
  • Masonry crews change the shape of the new basement along with the roof line. Crews are working diligently in the basement to lay-up block that will shape the utility space along with the elevator shafts that will support the future Surgery area. Also, block work on the roof shapes the parapet wall where the West Tower will go vertical in future master facility plan phases. This work is done now so that the roof doesn’t haft to be penetrated in the future to expand the West Tower.
