Coping with Heart Disease

It is important for you and your family to understand the feelings you may have because of your cardiac event. Many of the feelings you have are normal. You may feel disbelief, anger or frustration that this is happening to you. Or, you may feel sadness and a sense of loss due to the need for lifestyle changes. All of these feelings are a normal part of healing. 

 

As you begin to recover and learn more about your illness, you will begin to feel better. Learning to cope with your feelings can help you heal and enjoy your life more.

 

Feelings that are Normal

 

Below is a list of feelings that you may have right now. They are yours and they are not wrong. However, if they persist for a long time, you should speak to a counselor or your doctor.

  • Lack of interest in activities
  • Less energy for daily activities
  • Anger
  • Increased / decreased sleeping time 
  • Sadness or tearfulness
  • Forgetfulness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Jealousy of those who are healthier   
  • Increased awareness of aches and pains

Handling Your Feelings

 

Try the steps below to help you deal with the feelings you may be experiencing.

  • Pay attention to your feelings Change is hard for people and "feeling down in the dumps" is a normal part     of healing and recovery. If you can't shake the blues or the blues turn into depression, there is help. Be sure to talk to your doctor.
  • Keep yourself and your family informed Feeling you have control often makes living with heart disease easier. Learn about your condition so that you know what to expect and what you can do to better your condition. Talk with your family about what you learn. Learning about your condition can ease their concerns and give you someone to talk to. 
  • Accept support from others It is okay and a good idea to accept support from family, friends and others such as your church community. Let them be there for you emotionally and when you need help with life's daily activities.

Slow down and look at life differently

 

Being diagnosed with heart disease often makes people re-evaluate and gain a new appreciation for life. Focus on what is important to you. Take time to smell the roses, listen to nature and notice sunrises and sunsets. Allow yourself time for rest and relaxation. Take time for the people you care about.
